 A Handy Little Guide. Sep 07, 2010
I've never been diagnosed with any sort of personality or learning disorder. My family and I have suspected it for some time, however. One suspect is Asperger's Syndrome--while I don't want to condition myself to believe I am an "Aspie" without proffessional assessment, I can assess some Vine books. The first for consideration is Nick Dubin's "Asperger Syndrome and Anxiety." Sorry it took so long--I've been reviewing a lot of interesting stuff!
The writing is sound. The author mostly avoids being a "little professor" with unnecessary jargon or excessively formal grammar. Yet he doesn't shy from some basic counseling and psychiatric terms. I estimate a 9th or 10th grade reading level. The book also appears to carry over ideas from Asperger Syndrome and Bullying, providing a continuity and transition for the familiar reader.
As slim as the volume already is, wordiness does detract from the read. It's okay to use contractions, and to replace "medical science has proven" with "medicine proves" or "medicine proved". Also, repetition of key points is a fundamental of exposition, but it can also be annoying. Please don't confuse repetition with the "action points" at the end of each chapter--I think those are a good idea.
The idea of this book is more introduction than a therapeutic course. It summarizes the original research, opinions, or treatments of various doctors in the field. The author lends weight to what he feels is going to be the most useful to his audience, as opposed to bogging down the text with an objective history or index of treatment. Dubin periodically admits his personal bias, and recommends deeper reading. The value of Dubin's own experience is that readers can compare and contrast it to the anecdotes of other writers, forming whatever opinion will be helpful to you. That said, I feel the book should further explore its source theories and the author's own conclusions. As short as the book is, plenty of room lies for growth.
The most helpful idea off the bat is the sort of thing building off my own science reading. I have long empowered my obstacles. Something as simple as navigating to a new house or business continues to fill me with anxiety, even if less than I used to feel when I was learning to drive. Dubin has even beat me to publishing books despite being the same age, because I've attached too much clutter in my head to the challenge. Do not give unnecessary power to your problems--so simple, and yet so easy to miss without an outsider to point it out for me.
I only have one big problem with this book as therapy. I'm fascinated by blendings of rational and irrational thought. Our minds veer from science to magic to lunacy and back without missing a beat. Keeping in mind that I reviewed a pre-publication proof, this is the problem with "Anxiety and Spirituality".
I agree some people think and fear and fret until the idea of Death hems them inside. So I'm pleased the actual spiritualism and philosophy tries to open folks up while keeping them on planet Earth. Such as the examples of Victor Frankl and Kierkegaard, or lessons from the Koran and Buddhism. Such psychological tools do not necessarily put the patient into a collision course with science.
My concern lies with the feel-good, New Age pseudoscience from the 1970s and early `80s. Including Near Death Experiences by Raymond Moody and Elizabeth Ross, or Rupert Sheldake's version of morphogenetic fields. Dubin does not inform his readers that these are fringe concepts, but reframes them as appealing to the independent spirit of an Aspie. He also plays loose with Chaos Theory and Quantum Mechanics, assigning soul or God-like traits to them in an attempt to illustrate that the patient need not fear the death of identity.
But in doing so, the author commits the age-old sin of imposing fancy upon the mundane. And a grave sin indeed; as the target audience suffers a syndrome, often co-morbid with various personality disorders, feeding delusions might only cause more harm. Chaos theory, for example, does not say that the flap of a butterfly's wings in Brazil will cause a tornado in Texas, but almost the opposite--that a butterfly is dampened and dispersed by its environment so that we can't predict any long term, long-distance effects. This very uncertainty is part of what is so upsetting to many people, not just Aspies, so imagine what will happen emotionally if somebody stumbles upon a contrary view.
Of course, psychologists and psychiatrists are as human as their patients, with conclusions as likely to slide from medicine to voodoo. As an antidote, I recommend Occum's Razor: "Do not multiply entities unnecessarily." A nice dovetail to Dubin's own advice, do not give power to ideas that have not earned it.
Dubin's power isn't to shrill for religion or pseudoscience--it is to empower the patient. And for that I give him all credit. Writing books will not cure his syndrome, so much as manage it while earning an income and educating society. "Asperger's Syndrome and Anxiety" cannot be considered a comprehensive text, but it is an accessible introduction to some popular therapies and personal advice, and on that level it has promise.

This book, in my opinion, was extensively researched and carefully crafted. The author offers a lot of practical advice and hope without romanticising. I found it very helpful in both understanding Aspergers and coping with it. Thanks, Mr. Dubin, we ARE capable of empathy.

very good resource for Asperger's Syndrome folks May 21, 2010
My son has Asperger's and some books we have found are useful and some are duds. this is a good book, with practical advice for the person with Asperger's and the one who loves them.
My son has had panic attacks from time to time and with Asperger's people treat you differant. You know you are differant.. and see and hear things in another way than others do.
Good resource, wise council.. worth buying.

This book is definately worth reading by people with Aspergers and those close to them. The first part is very insightful. It offers lots of info on how Aspies think and view things, and how these common viewpoints can lead to anxiety. The author, who has Aspergers, discusses how Aspies may try to overcompensate for the "deficiencies" of Aspergers and how the way that this is done can lead to anxiety. The trauma of growing up with Aspergers, and the effects this has on peoples' psyche is covered at length. Also discussed, with great insight, is: hypersensitivity, perfectionism, difficulty transistioning, monotropism, problems with nonverbal cues, auditory processing difficulties, and depression. This are not discussed clinically, thought there is much scientific evidence mentioned, but are discussed as they actually feel to the person experiencing them. Again, great insights into thought processes that lead to or further these issues. The second half of the book covers what to do about these issues. Here I found the book to be lacking. When the book ventured into "new age" things like morphogenic fields in its chapter on spirituality, it lost my respect. Still, the first half of the book has insights worth reading.

I work with high school age Asperger's students and used this book as a guide in helping thenm understand and deal with the anxiety many of them confront. I loaned this book to one of the students and he devoured it. Great resource!
