Wootton takes on the goals of treatment, basic misunderstandings, and assumptions that are in the way of achieving Bipolar In Order. Living with bipolar and depressive conditions is never underestimated in Tom Wootton's books. By examining all states of depression, mixed states, and mania unflinchingly and deeply he arrives at conclusions that challenge the current paradigm. The author insists on a higher level of Insight, Freedom, Stability, Self-mastery, and Equanimity as end goals that are achievable. Asked time and again why someone would resist treatment, Wootton states that the most important thing to offer is a life worth living! Expecting someone to park their brain in the garage like an unused Ferrari is not an appealing treatment model. Rather than receiving the training, therapy, mind skills and behavioral control that is the foundation of real stability, current models of "avoidance therapy" try to mask and remove symptoms that will never go away. Living in fear of the wide ranging states of consciousness and mood that those with mental conditions experience is not a life worth living. Confronting these conditions head on, identifying one's strengths and learning self mastery is a more viable solution proposed by Bipolar In Order. | | | |

Filled with hope Feb 13, 2010
By Laura Snoeberger I think this book is going to receive both 1 star reviews and 5 star reviews because it is challenging and clearly different than the main stream messages about living with bipolar and depression. I liked it because it gave me a new perspective that I found interesting and filled with hope. I think many are going to misinterpret Mr. Wootton's concepts as impossible to achieve, or too expensive to achieve, or not within the grasp of those with mania and depression. The mental health system is treating everybody as if this isn't possible. That's what is wrong with the system -- not with this book. It is encouraging to have an advocate on our side that believes in the capacity for change, personal growth and mastery of depression or bipolar. While many people will want to say wellness is not possible, ever, - there will be many more who recognize the message of Bipolar In Order as true.
I found the second part of the book very interesting. Few 'guides' for living with bipolar or depression have spelled out so clearly how to assemble a professional team of help and support, what the role of different professionals could be. Few books are so straight forward and clear about what different professionals do -- or what you should ask of them. While I wouldn't choose to include every single part of this program in my own life, this book at least points to the benefits of doing so. Again, Mr. Wootton seems to be spelling out the best options, not the lowest common denominator -- something we should try to achieve, not a life that we have to accept that always has "illness" attached to it. So, yes, those who are attached to the concept of illness, disease and powerlessness aren't going to like this book. Those who crave an empowered life of control and mastery will want to read this book and they will love it.

Excellent and Highly Recommended Guide. Feb 04, 2010
By Avid Bibliophile I come from a family of bipolars and know personally that the condition can be both a blessing and a challenge. Too often the blessings are ignored in books about the bipolar condition. This book offers comprehensive, practical, drug-free, and positive tools to assist individuals to reach their scientifically-recognized enhanced creative potential, while not permitting the pesky accompanying gremlins to take them too far down. I highly recommend this book.

A New Paradigm Jan 12, 2010
By L.A.H.
"bibliophile"
Bipolar in Order is Wootton's best book yet. It is a distillation of his unorthodox views of what it means to be bipolar. Bipolarity brings with it a wide range of moods and emotions, from suicidal depression to ecstatic mania and everything in between. Conventional wisdom advises bipolars to maintain their moods somewhere in the middle, flattening out their emotions so that they are neither too high nor too low. Wootton shifts the paradigm: it is not the feelings, but our response to them that is the problem. The feelings actually enrich our lives and deepen our humanity. Using introspection and the other tools outlined in Bipolar in Order, Wootton believes that bipolars can learn to control their outward behavior, allowing them to enjoy the entire spectrum of their emotions.

Thought provoking Jan 24, 2010
By skigirl I like books that challenge my perception of complex issues (and bipolar disorder is extremely complex), and this book certainly fits the bill. The author addresses the topic with a fresh perspective. Many of his ideas correspond with the theory of cognitive behavioral therapy, but this book takes that a step further. I like his premise that stigma begins with the very name: bipolar "disorder". Too many people (doctors included) automatically reduce their expectations of a patients' success after diagnosis, by virtue of what we call it. Someone with a "disorder" can't possibly reach their potential, but this book speaks to those who are tired of these low expectations and creates a framework to change and excel. I found this book full of "A-ha" moments, as Oprah would say. I found this book insightful, motivating and hopeful.
I would recommend this book to any diagnosed bipolar who is ready to take full responsibility of their life and ready to challenge themselves to exceed what they (or others) thought possible. Also, a good resource for family & friends who may need a little more insight into mental conditions.

Not worth reading Aug 24, 2010
By Mark Snyder Sorry, but this is just not the breakthrough it claims to be. It is one man's story. Tom is not representative of most people with bipolar, just the opposite. To claim his personal experience represents a new paradigm in the treatment of bipolar is beyond egotistical.
The first half of the book is a convoluted, wordy argument that he has somehow discovered a new way at looking at bipolar similar in scope to Columbus believing the earth was round. It reminds me of infomercials on TV. Keep throwing words at people and eventually they have to believe you. I'll boil it down for you. All he is saying is keep a positive attitude and don't settle for anything less than the best you can be.
The second half of the book is simply common sense. People with bipolar benefit from a wide range of support, from psychiatrists, nutritionists, personal trainers, psychologists, financial advisors, career counselors and many more. Unfortunately, the people who provide this type of support do not come cheap and most are beyond the reach of the average person with bipolar.
Correctly treating bipolar is expensive. Certainly (as the book notes) having three one hour sessions with a psychiatrist before starting on medication would be nice, but that is not the real world. After reading this book you may have a period of optimism, but unless you are on the correct medications and have the time, money for specialists, family support, social support, workplace support, etc. to do the practical things that people with bipolar should be doing anyway, I'm afraid you will find the book ends up like the kitchen gadget you ordered on TV, unused.
I'm not going to pepper this review with specific examples, I already wasted a couple of hours reading it. If you are not sure it is for you, go ahead and order it. If you don't like it, send it back for a refund. That's what I'm doing next.
