 Great for Elementary kids! Feb 25, 2011

I'm an elementary school counselor and have really enjoyed using this book with students. They love it! It is a great springboard for helping children become more assertive, and to role play and practice the tips and 'the plan' for dealing with others who tease or torment them.

As a school counselor, I use this book as part of my bullying curriculum. Just like what happens in the book - kids that are being harrassed and bullied somtimes keep it a secret for many reasons - mostly having to do with fear. I love how the parents don't rescue him by solving the whole thing for him - they help 'rescue' the situation by empowering him with strategies to first deal with the it on his own. This is a good one! My students really like it and get a lot out of it. I especially like the part about Power Words!

I currently am a Certified School Counselor and I find Blue Cheese Breath and Stinky Feet to be a very well written book on the topic of bullies. Catherine DePino uses a captivating plot line to inform children about what to do if a bully harasses them. The "Plan" to ward off a bully that is mentioned in the book is very appropriate and useable for children. Being in the field of counseling children, I could attest to this. I could only hope every middle school English class could have Blue Cheese Breath and Stinky Feet be a part of the curriculum. This book empowers kids as well as helps them to build tolerance for someone who is not like them. Bravo to DePino for what I call an exceptional book!

Blue Cheese Breath and Stinky Feet: How to Deal With Bullies by Catherine Depino is not a bad book. It gives some good, practical advice on how to stand up to bullies. Unfortunately, it does not go far enough. It assumes its technique will work. But in reality, many times Depino's technique won't work. Bullies just keep coming - then what? The other way this book falls short is that it only addresses one type of bullying, the classic verbal abuse and threats of physical aggression. If you want a book to help your child who has to live in the real world, the book They Call Me Chicken: A Story of Courage by John Caporale, a psychologist, is the way to go. This book is for 3rd-6th graders and doesn't try to teach kids to stop others from teasing and bullying when they can't, but instead teaches kids how to cope with it in a manner where they can truly maintain their self-esteem. And what's more, it shows kids how to cope with all types of bullying situations, from the classic beat-you-up type to the more subtle manipulative coercion. This book should be in every elementary school classroom in the country. You can find it right here on Amazon.com.
