A nice summer refresher for homeschoolers Jun 06, 2009 We found the Daily Math Practice books to be a good summer review for our kids. We just happen to homeschool, but they would be equally valuable to anyone. They are not what I would consider comprehensive, but they do help keep things fresh.
Typically, my kids will do a week at a time. The problems are quick enough not to feel like a big assignment, so the complaints are kept to a minimum. Also, the manuals get progressively more challenging - Friday's work is usually harder than Monday's, and the end of the book is harder than the beginning. Check out a few sample pages (an option by the product), to get a better idea of the problem difficulty.
Please be kind enough to indicate if reviews are helpful.

A mixed bag May 18, 2009 We've used this workbook to supplement our homeschool math curriculum (Shiller), which is more advanced but at a different pace than Daily Math Practice. For example, our math doesn't do fractions yet but does do 3 and 4 digit addition with carrying. My son's reading skills aren't up to this workbook, but his geometry skills far surpass it. His mental math and Roman numerals are ahead of the book, as well. In addition, the format is boring: black and white, no use of manipulatives (though you can use your own ideas, of course), no variation on the pages at all.
Every child is different, as is every math curriculum. I wouldn't purchase this again, but if my son was still in school and needed practice, this workbook would be fine. Math To Learn/Math On Call/Math At Hand, along with their Teacher Resource Books, are far better for parent/family resources and practice of skills. We use them frequently and can't recommend them highly enough. But Daily Math Practice is quick and reinforces some skills, and it does help with knowing where they "should" be for homeschoolers.
Great foundational book for homeschoolers Dec 15, 2008 I am happy with the structure and content of this workbook and all the other grade level books by this publisher; I used them in first and second grade with my son and plan to do the same with my daughter.
I piece together my curriculum from lots of different sources, using this publisher as my primary source for geography, math, spelling and language.

Good Choice for Beginning Math Problems - a review of "Daily Math Practie, Grade 1" Mar 22, 2007 I really like this workbook. It is not one of those that's in color, but the layout is simple and clear without a lot of distraction, which is something that not all of the books in this category can claim.
The idea is that you do 5 problems per session, with a small quiz at the end of five sessions to make sure the information 'stuck'. We have found (and I'm now starting this book with my second child) that 5 problems are so easy and fun that we sometimes do more than one unit a day.
Besides the clear format, the other aspect of this book that I like is that the problems aren't all presented in the same format. For example, right off the bat, they have horizontal arithmetic problems along with a word problems and pictorial problems.
A horizontal problem:
3 + 1 = ____
Word problem :
Tom has one ball. He buys one more. How many does he have in all?
Picture problem:
Well can't paste a picture, but here's an example: The picture will show four pennies and the question will be "How much?"
Four Stars. We have found this an excellent workbook that can be easily understand. Five problems at a time is generally not too much, even for active children like mine. This book however is ONLY a workbook with exercise problems. Parents and others looking for HOW to teach math book will have to look elsewhere. May I suggest "Math for Your 1st and 2nd Grader" by Steve Slavin. Math for Your First- and Second-Grader: All You Need to Know to Be Your Child's Best Teacher

Money well spent on this book! Mar 13, 2007 I am so glad that we found this book! Five problems a night makes math FUN, rather than WORK for my child. So much so that he will do a few days worth of problems in one sitting.
The book has variety to keep him interested, and he's learning new skills from it also. I will definitely buy the grade 2 book for next year.
