This helpful guide explains the principles of academic integrity in a clear, straightforward way and shows students how to apply them in all academic situations—from paper writing and independent research to study groups and lab work. Teachers can use this book to open a discussion with their students about these difficult issues. Students will find a trusted resource for citation help whether they are studying comparative literature or computer science. Every major reference style is represented. Most important of all, many universities that adopt this book report a reduction in cheating and plagiarism on campus. For this second edition, Charles Lipson has updated hundreds of examples and included many new media sources. There is now a full chapter on how to take good notes and use them properly in papers and assignments. The extensive list of citation styles incorporates guidelines from the American Anthropological Association. The result is the definitive resource on academic integrity that students can use every day. “Georgetown’s entering class will discover that we actually have given them what we expect will be a very useful book, Doing Honest Work in College. It will be one of the first things students see on their residence hall desks when they move in, and we hope they will realize how important the topic is.”—James J. O’Donnell, Provost, Georgetown University “A useful book to keep on your reference shelf.”—Bonita L. Wilcox, English Leadership Quarterly

The perfect book for all students---and all faculty Jul 30, 2009
By Morris Goldstein Plagiarism has become both a plague and an industry in the United States. College students can buy fully-written and even fully-footnoted term papers online and hand them in to their unwitting professors and be given high grades. This is a scandal and a true evil.
This fine book, DOING HONEST WORK IN COLLEGE by the highly-respected University of Chicago Professor Charles H. Lipson is the best possible antidote to these pernicious developments. Written in clear, non-academic language, filled with vivid examples and even humor, this book guides today's students---from high school through graduate school---to one of education's finest traditions, including doing honest work. In this age when such academic writers as former Harvard assistant professor Doris Kearns Goodwin and current Harvard Law Professor Charles Ogletree have both admitted to plagiarism---the appropriation of the words of others without proper attribution---I would hope that every faculty member in every university, not only those at Harvard, be required to read and understand this great book. No one will regret reading it, and everyone who aspires to being as respected and admired as much as the book's author is could learn a lot from him. His book is a pleasure to read, and is a splendid contribution to having a fine experience in high school, college, graduate, law or medical school--- and in life. KUDOS to Professor Lipson.

Terrific book: should be in every home Aug 08, 2009
By Ming Toy Levy To err is human, but to hand in a term paper that a student has borrowed from a friend, or purchased on the Internet instead of writing by himself or herself is a perfect way to be expelled from high school, college or graduate school. This wonderful book, written by one of America's most highly-respected teachers, Professor Charles Lipson of the University of Chicago, should be the first book a student reads before entering high school. Buy this for yourself, for your friends and for your family: anyone in school should own a copy. Three cheers for a terrific book.

Fantastic gift for high school grads Jul 30, 2009
By Clarice Feldman To explain exactly what honest academic work is---and to prevent plagiarism, the stealing of the words of others and insertion of them into one's own work, pretending that one is the actual author---the University of Chicago's brilliant Professor Charles H. Lipson has come to the rescue. A highly-acclaimed and deeply respected author, scholar and much-beloved professor, Dr. Lipson writes with admirable clarity and provides vivid and memorable examples of what not to do.
In no way pedantic, Professor Lipson shows how integrity in one's academic writings will be a major advantage to any student, and how failure to do work with integrity and honesty can only lead to a label of "dishonest" or "plagiarist" which will stay with the student for decades to come, invariably for the rest of his or her life. People do not forget dishonesty. It is a permanent wound that never heals.
It may seem self-evident that no one should appropriate the work of others as their own or to cheat in other ways on term papers. Alas, it is not self-evident and, indeed, many Ivy League universities have retained proven plagiarists on their faculties.
The United States cannot and will not maintain its leadership in the world if its college students cannot do honest work and maintain their integrity even as they compete for high grades, and ultimately scholarships and jobs with their fellow students. Professor Lipson carefully explains why doing dishonest work in college can tarnish an entire lifetime. His own exemplary writings, both in this book and his many others, are a model for how a writer can achieve respect, admiration and a worldwide reputation for excellent writing without resorting to anything but careful reading, punctilious note-taking, independent analysis and clear, concise writing.

SIMPLY THE BEST BOOK TO JUMP-START A COLLEGE EDUCATION Jul 30, 2009
By G.W. Shelton Other than engaging in nonstop sex, drugs and rock and roll, there are few activities more harmful to getting a great college education than being clueless about DOING HONEST WORK IN COLLEGE. There was once a time, about 50 years ago, when every public school in the United States made sure that students didn't even begin high school without knowing certain basics of researching a term paper.
As strange as it may sound today, it was viewed as an essential part of educating students for high school, college and for life.
No more. That is why Charles Lipson's book comes not a moment too soon. It is so clearly written, so beautifully researched, so filled with uncommon common sense and wit, so pleasurable to read that any high school student you know (or are) will enjoy it enormously. I have given it to more than a dozen students and they have all told me it was the single best book they have read to prepare them for college.
I cannot recommend this book more highly than I do. If you've never quite understood what the professor expects of you, this is the book for you. It explains why it's important to "do honest work in college"---not because Professor Lipson is some super-Eagle Scout (no insult intended to Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts or Eagle Scouts) but because once a student starts handing in dishonest work in college, he or she will likely continue to believe that he or she can get away with it. Some of them will actually enter politics and still believe they can get away with dishonesty. It turns out that DOING HONEST WORK IN COLLEGE is, in fact, one of the best books to prepare you for life, as well as for college.
For college-bound students, this should be---as it is at Georgetown University---the first book the student reads. Every college that can afford it, should do as Georgetown does: give it as a gift to each incoming freshman. It is THE best place to begin.
Highest recommendation.

Don't leave for college without it! Aug 19, 2009
By MacPherson the Reader
"Animal Lover"
There are many---indeed, too numerous to mention---enjoyable ways to end your college career, but doing dishonest work in college isn't one of them. This readable, easily accessible book will save you, or your child, grandchild or friend, from accidentally running afoul of the standards of honest scholarship expected of every student today. It will give you invaluable tips from an actual professor (Lipson teaches at the University of Chicago) about how to succeed in college, which is one of the first steps to succeeding in life after college. Buy this book for anyone and everyone you know who is entering college. No student should be without it. It is a great buy, especially on Amazon.
