Dyslexia: A Teenager's Guide by Dr. Sylvia Moody Aug 27, 2005
By K. J. Kindersley This book, fresh and original in approach, speaks with directness, clarity and understanding. We follow the personal stories of two teenagers, Louisa, dyslexic, 17 and studying A levels and Paul, 14 and dyspraxic, who describe what it is like to live with their particular difficulties. The real life experiences illuminate the world of dyslexia for teenagers and provide a clever underlying and unifying narrative for the whole book.
As the chapters unfold, we find a wealth of information and practical advice. This is the real strength of the book. Dr Moody understands the problems faced by teenagers with dyslexia and at all times, her expert advice is presented in a most accessible and engaging way.
The first section `What is Dyslexia?' explains the nature of dyslexia and how underlying difficulties might manifest. The middle section, `Improving Skills', gives specialist advice on the skills of organization, memory and perception and provides strategies for improving reading, spelling, essay writing and preparing for examinations. In these chapters, we recognize Dr. Moody's unique touch. New skills are presented with careful detail, guiding the teenager step by step. Complex tasks are made manageable through worked examples.
The book looks forward beyond school, with guidance on the support available at college or university and in the world of work. It concludes with useful contacts and further reading. We are also delighted to hear that Louisa and Paul, now our firm friends, have succeeded to the next stage of achieving their ambitions. My own dyslexic teenager said, `This book is different. It's as if someone who really understands my problems is talking to me and helping.' It is an invaluable book.
