 The Best Graduate Level Book I've Read Jun 30, 2009

I am working on my second Masters Degree and have completed 107 hours of Masters level classes. This educational book is by far the best book I've ever read. It is informative, well organized, easy to comprehend, useful and can be used with the My Education Lab component. As you read different techniques, the my education lab aspect will allow you to log onto a site on the computer and actually allow you to watch a teacher put that concept into practice!! You gets hands on experience as if you were in the classroom yourself. I can not say enough great things about this book. If you are wanting to learn more about special education because you are a teacher or even a parent of a special needs child, this book is invaluable.

This book is confusing to read and get information out of. The chapters are littered with informative vignettes, but there are so many, and the publisher has done so little to separate them from the main text, that it distracts from the reading. Looking through the table of contents, it appears to have a logical and consistent format, but in practice the small headings and overwhelming number of figures, tables, and sidebars make the structure hard to follow. I have to constantly refer back to the table of contents to make sense of what the chapter has covered and where it is going. The book has a lot of information, but it is certainly a mile wide and an inch deep, which I guess is somewhat the nature of introductory texts. Nearly 50% of students receiving special education accommodations do so because they are classified with learning disabilities, but there is only one chapter in the text on this.

WELL WRITTEN, UP TO DATE INFORMATION, WELL ORGANIZED, EASY TO READ. WHEN YOU PURCHASE THE BOOK NEW IT INCLUDES ACCESS TO A GREAT WEBSITE WITH VIDEOS OF TEACHING STRATEGIES, SAMPLE QUIZZES AND STUDY GUIDES.

 Big hardcover book, full of images. Sep 28, 2011

I ordered this book for a required course in my Masters program. It is full of images and examples that break up the text. The hardcover itself is rather flimsy and very flexible. Many of the real-life associations the book tries to make are great examples, but too lengthy. These examples are color coded, but it is sometimes difficult to maintain reading flow when the text is broken up by so many images. I would have prefered a smaller book, with less distractions.
