If you want to discourage your bi-polar teen buy this book Feb 26, 2010 Wow, I didn't know someone could get a book published that could be so detrimental to a MOOD DISORDER. Oh and by the way, the reason I capitalized that is because the authors continue to refer to bi-polar as a mental illness rather than a mood issue. What planet have they been on? Do they still refer to disabled people as handicapped?
I bought the book for my daughter who is not only bi-polar but extremely bright. Yes she has emotional challenges, but she also has potential that is, well, mind blowing. We feel blessed that her bi-polar troubles have come to out during the years that she is still living at home. We are working with positive ideas of learning to understand her triggers and positive ways to manage. When Amazon sent me the review for this book, since we have bought so many others on the subject, I though it might by a modern take on some positive ideas written just for teens. Boy was I wrong!
It is the most disturbing "downer" I have ever read. Let me just introduce you to a few chapter titles:
"the stigma of mental illness"; See my comments above, the chapter focuses on self-stigmatizing not dealing with the outside world's impressions.
"pseudo-acceptance: a common blind spot" Quote: "You get help. You take your meds and you seem to adjust well." You seem to have accepted the reality of bi-polar, but possibly you have only masked or denied your deeper, more complex feelings about the illness." Did they really just say that? Did they think it was okay to say to a teenage brain, that has plenty of self-doubt anyway, that even if you are dealing with it, that maybe you really aren't. What were they trying to accomplish with that freakish, depressive line? Not that there are many teens that are doing it "just right".
Making a mood and energy chart. Yeah, there's a great idea for a teen. What teen, has the desire or time to organize a chart. Look at the floor of any teen's room and talk to me about making a mood and energy chart.
I'm also amazed that the writers would write such a boring book when they say their audience is teens. What teen is going to sit down and read a dreary manuscript about how they are probably going to have to give up their hopes and dreams. You could have at least jazzed up that message a bit.
So if thats the message you want to send to your teenager: give up your hopes and dreams; then by all means buy this book. I'm sending this copy back! Shame on the authors and publishers for having so little consideration for their audience.
