5Gluten Nation - Much-Needed Help for Solving Widespread Health Problems  Dec 06, 2009 By David Lemberg "Science Journalist and Educator"
Gluten is everywhere, not only in breads, cakes, and cookies, but also in canned soups, prepared meats and cheeses, household products, and many pharmaceutical preparations. Oddly, humans cannot digest gluten. This inability creates a potential problem.

Gluten intolerance and celiac disease affect children, teenagers, and adults. Symptoms may begin at age 2 or not until age 60 or later. Importantly, gluten intolerance and celiac disease may be important predisposing and underlying conditions to many complex and chronic diseases. Any person who has spent months and years trying to find effective treatment for painful and debilitating symptoms may actually be gluten intolerant and/or have celiac disease.

Gluten Nation is a very welcome port in the storm of undiagnosed and misunderstood conditions and diseases. The book covers all aspects of gluten intolerance, celiac disease, and related conditions such as autism, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and infertility. Gluten Nation provides valuable information on all these relationships and provides important methods to begin solving difficult these medical problems.

Gluten Nation helps people navigate the medical system, describing what to look for in a doctor and how you can empower the doctor-patient relationship. The book provides detailed information and instructions on how to set-up a gluten-free lifestyle, and includes many delicious and healthful recipes to help you begin your journey back to being well.

Possibly the best part of Gluten Nation is the personal stories that open each chapter, stories that will warm your heart, possibly bring a tear to your eye, and inspire you to take action on your own behalf and on behalf of your family and loved ones.

5Excellent and needed coverage of autoimmune issues  Jan 29, 2010 By Paleo Man
There has been great need for updated books that embrace the fast developing scientific advances in understanding gluten intolerance and its many manifestations. It is astounding that so many physicians specializing in rheumatology deny or do not understand the connection of gluten intolerance to the development and exacerbation of autoimmune disorders such as lupus, Sjogren's, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune hepatitis, and others.

In Gluten Nation, integrative rheumatologist Alexander Shikhman MD, PhD, does a good job of describing how a strict gluten free regimen can be the most critical element in an integrative program for treatment and recovery. And I don't use the word, "recovery" lightly. It is a word not ordinarily associated with autoimmune disorders.

Here and there small groups of autoimmune patients have been discovering on their own that they can achieve long term and often indefinite remissions through dietary interventions that almost always include a strict gluten free and casein free element. And the word is slowly spreading in that small portion of the autoimmune community willing to undertake the dramatic dietary interventions. Examples are found in the book, The MS Recovery Diet, by Ann Sawyer and Judith Bachrach, dealing with multiple sclerosis. The August 2009 issue of Scientific American had an article by Dr. Alessio Fasano on the connection between gluten and autoimmune disease.

Now, in Dr. Shikhman's excellent book we have an intriguing road map that could provide a key to prevention and recovery for a number of disorders, including autoimmune diseases as well as certain cancers, mental disorders, and neurological problems such as idiopathic ataxia.

This book is a must read for anyone with an autoimmune disease.

5Newly diagnosed  Dec 06, 2009 By yanee
I am gluten sensitive and only recently found out. Gluten Nation really helped me understand how gluten can be the cause of many unexplained illnesses. So little is understood about this hidden underlying factor that is compromising the health of so many people. For the first time, I understand the science behind many of my issues. This is a must read for anyone who suffers from persistent aches and pains or otherwise believes gluten might be standing in the way of their wellness program.

5Amazing Personal Application  Jan 27, 2010 By K. Shustek "Kathryn"
As a health care professional and someone who closely evaluates what I consume, I found this book amazingly helpful. Gluten Nation's insight into how gluten consumption can drastically effect your body's crucial functions opened my eyes to an aspect of nutrition I was completely unaware of. Additionally, unlike most health and nutrition books, Gluten Nation portrays several personal stories that do a great job of connecting gluten intolerance to the human condition and identify real life struggles that many readers may identify with.

5A Great Read!  Dec 24, 2009 By Janie
Gluten Nation is superb! Once I started reading it, I didn't want to put it down. I wish I would have purchased more than 2 copies, as I have so many people in my life that could greatly benefit from this powerful body of work. Interestingly, when I was reading it on the plane, several people commented that they too suffer from gluten intolerance. It is so common and sadly most of us do not even know that our health problems could be greatly alleviated by utilizing the wisdom in this book. I so hope this becomes a best seller so that more people can live more healthy and fulfilling lives. Thank you for writing such an informative and helpful book that is also a great read and a great service to us all!
