5A must-read for ASD families--a great read for ALL families  Nov 17, 2010 By Duana C. Welch "Love Science author"
Temple Grandin personally commanded Jennifer Myers to write this book.

That's right, THE Temple Grandin heard a talk Myers gave, called her, insisted that Myers turn the talk into a book, and offered to write the foreward.

Thank God she did. This is a phenomenal book that makes an inescapable point: If you don't teach your kid the basic life skills, from how to order food at a restaurant to how to pick out groceries to how to be polite to police officers and teachers and other NT (neurotypical) humans, then your kid's world will always be much smaller than you--or probably they--want and need it to be.

On the other hand, if you learn what Myers teaches, and pass that on to your kids, there is an entire "Geek World" out there waiting to embrace your ASD kid. A valid, thriving world with high employability!

Myers is herself an "Aspie at large" whose personal experience of being undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, and miraculously parented make for many of the compelling insights in the book. She adds to this her experience in being sibling to a brother with autism; consultant to some of the largest school districts in the United States; and a national speaker on the topic. Her logic is clear and infallible; her life experience is invaluable; her sense of humor is hilarious; and her suggestions can easily and inexpensively be applied on the spot in numerous real-life situations. She helps parents and educators not only to see why and how they must teach ASD kids life skills, but why it's vital to build on the *strengths* and specializations or interests the children already have, no matter where on the spectrum they are.

In summary, for anyone who teaches or parents kids with ASD, you've got to have this book. Read it with a highlighter and keep it on the nightstand like I do. For everyone else who parents or teaches NT (neurotypical) kids--you'll get a lot out of Myers' suggestions, too.

5An inspiring story for all!  Nov 20, 2010 By bennet perlson
Jennifer Myers has given us quite a gift with her personal, touching first-hand account of growing up with undiagnosed Asperger's. From her experiences, she has learned which strategies help children become more independent as well as how to deal with schoolyard bullies and teasing. Jennifer trusts parents to do the right thing and uses humor to identify the tools and thinking to help reach and teach kids on the autism spectrum. This book should be required reading for all professionals in the field and offered to every family to instill hope and joy in parenting kids at all stages of development.

5You'll laugh! You'll cry! But mostly you'll laugh!  Nov 06, 2010 By Grymsayre
It was my privilege to hear McIlwee Myers at one of her earlier speaking engagements. It was about five years ago at the Texas Regional Autism Conference in Amarillo, Texas. She gave the keynote address to an audience of about 500 educators and parents, and she did not disappoint. I remember thinking that the people in the adjoining rooms must be wondering what all the laughter was about, and why we were having so much more fun than they were.

Because I have to tell you, this lady was FUN! The content of her speech was as serious and useful as it needed to be, but where she really excelled was in the delivery. She really knew how to see the humor in her subject, and how to make us see it too. If it is true that we remember the things we laugh at better than the things we do not, then the lessons she taught us must be better remembered than anything else we heard that day.

Now McIlwee Myers has written a book. Reading it is a lot like hearing her speak. It is wise and witty but above all it is fun. There cannot be many autism books that can be read with amusement by the general public. This book is one that can.

5A "must-have" for Aspies and Parents of Children with Asperger's Syndrome.  Feb 03, 2011 By Gavin Bollard
"How to Teach Life Skills to Kids with Autism or Asperger's" is a very practical book which will have you itching to try out a whole bunch of new techniques and strategies with your children before you're even a quarter of the way through.

I was really looking forward to reading this book because although there are lots of "autism stories" and "what is autism?" books, there are comparatively few practical guides - and even then, most of those focus on coping as a neurotypical parent or on "problem solving" rather than teaching practical skills that you can use in everyday situations.

The first few chapters are all background material about the author. They're mostly necessary because you need to know where she's coming from. After that however it's "all go" on advice you can really use.

I was expecting a book full of headings, tables, cute little diagrams, separate (boxed) examples and lists but surprisingly, the whole thing is prose.

This means that compared to other books of its size (a little over 300 pages), this book covers a lot more ground.

At first the "wall of text" may seem a little daunting but the chapters are short (under 10 pages each) and they stay on topic. Jennifer's writing style is also very easy to read and if you have nerdish tendencies, you'll discover that it's full of subculture references which keep it fresh, interesting and fun.

The book covers an amazing array of topics including: meeting people, proper greetings, table manners, teaching financial independence, road safety, choosing appropriate attire, standing up for your rights, kindness, positive attitudes and (gulp) chores.

You might be thinking that this must be a book for people with older children but it's not - it's made very clear that you have to start young. Most of the examples in the book seem to be aimed at children who are about seven years or older but there are toddler and preschooler references too.

Despite the title, this isn't just a book for parents. I found myself fascinated by some of the social rituals that Jennifer describes and I learned a lot which I'll have to adjust in my life. Is hand shaking really as complicated as all that? I've just realised that I've been doing a lot more social things wrong that I thought. No wonder I get strange looks at times.

Not to worry though because Jennifer also includes a lot of info on handling "failures" gracefully. An essential skill for perfectionists.

Throughout the book, Jennifer explains a lot of things from an aspie point of view. She shows how aspie rules and literalisms can produce some very unexpected interpretations. It was interesting to note that sometimes my aspie interpretations had led me to the same conclusions and sometimes I had reached different but equally "crazy" conclusions.

I was also surprised to note that in some cases, I have the same behaviour patterns but was unaware of my own motivations. It got me thinking and understanding more about myself.

This isn't one of those books that you read once and "put away". You're going to want to refer to it quite a bit. In fact, there's so much information in the book that the details fade very quickly. I already feel like I need to re-read some chapters before I try some of the techniques.

Jennifer makes it clear that you can't suddenly go from "nothing" to implementing all of the techniques in the book. It will take time and you'll get the best results by introducing new techniques and house rules slowly and at appropriate moments. In some cases, you may need to wait until your children reach certain milestones.

This is a book that you're going to need to keep for the long term and you'll need to re-read certain sections as and when they become more relevant.

Every parent and every aspie should have this book. It's brilliant.

5Enjoyable AND Informative - Definitely Worth the Read!  May 12, 2011 By Trish "Trish"
When I first read the title, How to Teach Life Skills to Kids with Autism or Asperger's, I wasn't sure exactly what it meant or how it would apply to me. After reading just a few pages, however, I was convinced that this was a message I needed to hear and that I could learn a lot from this book about how to help my son become a successful adult (and kid, for that matter)!

As Jennifer McIlwee Myers, the author and "Aspie at Large", puts it,

"No matter where a child is on the autism spectrum, and no matter where he or she is likely to end up, life skills count!"

While this is not an autobiography, the author draws freely on her own experience and that of her brother Jimmy, who has autism, to illustrate her points, and adds a lot of incredibly useful information by doing so, in my opinion. I also found her writing style to be extremely readable and greatly enjoyed the interjections of humor.

Just reading a few of the chapter titles themselves gives you some good rules to follow when teaching a child with autism:

Say What You Need to Say - chapter 6
Transmit Information in More than One Way - chapter 7
Information in Translation: Speak the Language Your Child Understands - chapter 8
Tap into Your Child's Interests - chapter 11

Some of the other rules, or perhaps a more accurate word would be techniques, which are discussed discusses are how to use repetition and persistence, and how to balance opportunities to teach with opportunities to succeed. As Jennifer McIlwee Myers describes this difficult balancing act:

"Too little success and too much frustration will add up to learned helplessness. Too little experience overcoming frustration and other obstacles will lead to a total lack of frustration tolerance. Figuring out ways to balance this is a tough job for parents, but it can be done."

So, Which Life Skills Are We Talking About?

You are probably wondering what specific skills are covered in the course of this book. Well, she makes it clear that she cannot possibly cover every skill or teaching method there is, but the skills discussed are of primary importance for getting along in this world. Also, many of the methods and examples can be applied and adapted to other situations, as well as to the interests and abilities of the individual child.

Skills discussed in the book include both general skills and some that are more specific to autism:

Chores (working as part of a team or group)
Punctuality
Appropriate Attire
Manners
Kindness (yes, this is a life skill)
Living with One's Own Obsessive Interests
Task Switching and Video Game Obsessions
Learning to Spend Time
Coping with Sensory Issues

And then there are the "Really, Really Big Skills That Everyone Needs":

Exercise for Mental and Physical Health
Good Sleep Habits
Dealing with Mistakes and Failures
Understanding Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Concepts

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I found myself reaching for it as eagerly as I would a novel, wanting to see where it would take me next.
