You Should Get It. Nov 18, 2010
By Sterling-Archer i bought this book for one reason... to increase my asvab score. But thats obvious right? Anyways i did some research and just figured id buy this book. it turned out to be a good choice.
you first read some slightly interesting info about what the asvab is and crap like that. then you take a Full length test to see where you stand. i took the test and failed horribly in science, arithmetic reasoning, mathmatics knowledge, electronic, auto and shop, and mechanical comprehension. iv been at this book for about 3 weeks and only have gotten to the mechanical knowledge. but heres what you want to know...
Vocab. just gives you little tricks on how to improve your vocab.
Word knowledge. literally half a page long to cut your time down.
paragraph comprehension. makes you know whats being asked. questions like whats the author asking and inference questions and some tips on how to cut down your time.
Math. very thorough. some good techniques like Back Solving.
Arithmetic reasoning. gives you everything you want to know. factors and multiples, positives and negative, fractions, ezponents and roots, ratios, proportions, probability, hell they even add a few vocabs that you already know like whats an interger or odd/even.
Mathmatics knowledge. Again thorough. they tell you what an expression is and how to solve it. same with equations. and they give you examples of EVERYTHING. they do a great review in geometry, (parallel lines, line segments, angles triangles. they even tell you how to find the area of a bunch of simple shapes such as a triangle and rectangle.)
General science. not the best review. dont get me wrong, they give out alot of interestion info. the problem is alot of it iv never seen on any asvab. they give you a huge paragraph on the human respiratory system and circulatory system?? iv never seen any of that on previous asvabs. but when they go into earth science it get a little better like whats The Kindom. earth science is well written too but a few things i dont think are needed like the type of clouds and layers of atmosphere. they are very brief on the solar system which kinda sucked but whatever. Physical science is loaded with ALOT of useful information such as newtons laws, what force, work, and power is, energy sound waves crap like that.
Electronic. Basic yet useful stuff. whats current, voltage, ac vs dc, resistance, ohms law, just a bunch of stuff. they even give you diagrams of different circuits like parallel circuit. Theres a bunch more stuff but again some i just dont feel are of any use.
Automotive. This is where im at and they go REAL....REAL deep into details. like the engine, cooling system, lubrication system, fuel system, and like 10 other systems each system being like 2 to 3 full length pages.
theres still Shop Information which identifies like 50 diferent tools. Mechanical Comprehension which is like Physical science with equations on how to solve enery and and power. tells you info about how much force and work a man has to do to push 100kg up an incline. Assembling Objects. I honestly dont know how to do it. i was just making educated quesses on the asvab. it seems like they give you tips and tricks on how to do it but its like 8 pgs long so it seems to be detailed.
well i Strongly suggest you buy this book if your going into the military. Even if your not and just want to brush up on your subjects i recommend getting this.
oh. i took the asvab three years ago and got a 36.... yeah i know, bad right? i took one like a week ago before i got to general science (which was my lowest score) and got a 51! half way done and already increased my score.
I hope this helps.

Harder than the test. A great tool. Jan 16, 2011
By J. Guzman
"JAG"
As an active duty military member in order for me to get a different job I have to boost my ASVAB score and this book helped me do it. If you are someone like me that hasn't been in high school for about 10 years and said bye-bye to math as soon as you got out of school. Then this is the book for you. Even if your taking the ASVAB for the first time this book will make the ASVAB seem easy.
The information in this book is harder than the actual test. You will basically over study with this book and prepare your self for a worse case scenario. Kaplan did a great job explaining each section and informing you whats next and how to study. This book will teach you a lot and help you understand each section.
The three sample test that come with this book should be used several times for you to get used to the style of testing. After that, look for more information online for free ASVAB testing so that you can take online test to see how much you learned and to try something different. I studied with this book for about a month straight and found practices test online so that I made sure that I was getting smarter and not just memorizing information.
You will need to practice more math after you have done the entire math sections so that you can get use to the tricky math questions. As for all the other sections this book pretty much gives you all the information you need. When I took the ASVAB for the second time I got exactly the score I needed but at the same time the exam felt easier than the book, I even found a incorrect question in the exam but the examiner couldn't fix it. I felt like a genius.
Any way buy the book, study hard, and study harder in the math portion. Lastly, practice, practice, practice.

book is okay Sep 23, 2011
By smp I got this book to study for the asvab i got a 71 on my pretest and next week i am taking the asvab. There are alot of errors in this book. 1. There are only 3 kingdoms in biology: plantae, fungi, animalia. Kingdom protista and monera no longer exist as of two or three years ago. so bacteria, protists are all in limbo right now. (I'm a Bio major). On practice test two i believe; there are two errors on the GS answer key. I found an error on one of the electrical tests answer keys and in the text about capicators. If you had a hard time in high school and really need help i would NOT suggest this book, i would suggest barrons asvab study guide much more concise, thorough alot more intense though. The math review in the kaplan is vague. But if you only need to brush up on math and etc then i guess use this book.

10X harder than the actual test Jun 11, 2011
By Sam Don't buy this book. It did not help me when i took the test. Only book that I can say that honestly helped me was Asvab AFQT for Dummies. That was gold compared to this. THis book has errors and is just a bad source to study off of. I don't recommend this book. So don't waste your time and money, trust me I was hoping it would be a great book, but its not. Most of the questions are not on the test. So whats the point. haha. ill give it a 2 star only because the book tried to help.

Ok book, but does have many errors. May 23, 2011
By Nao I bought the ASVAB for Dummies first, and considering I've been out of high school for several years, I didn't do too bad and still qualified for the military. I decided to buy this Kaplan book since it was recently published as I want to get a higher score for OCS purposes, but I must say that this book has many errors in it and probably shouldn't have been published just yet. It does have some good studying material in it, but I would highly recommend having both this book as well as ASVAB for Dummies and study both of them at the same time. The Kaplan book does go much more into detail than you really need to know which can be a little overwhelming. Again, it's not a terrible book, but many mistakes are in it when taking the practice tests and checking for the answers.
