 Good solid book for both lawyers and educators. Jun 01, 2000
This book is a must-have for educators. Since the push for inclusion means many students with disabilities are entering regular schools and classrooms with their peers, it is of great worth that the regular teacher as well as the special education teachers know the background of the laws that pertain to these students with diverse needs. It would be beneficial to both students, teachers, and parents to know and understand how the laws are applied in court, what an IEP is, what is expected of the teachers, and what can be expected of the students. I have the other major law books on disability laws, but this one is more geared toward other participants in the process besides lawyers. It is very readable and very understandable without having to go to law school to get a background in law first. I suggest this or rather recommend this to my friends and students who are interested in working with those with disabilities in regular school settings. This book is an excellent source regrading law and special education. I am currently still using the book for my class and I know it will be helpful when I take the state certification exam later on in the year.

This book is useful for those in both the education and the legal field (although law students and those in the legal profession might want to skip over the early law information - like the difference between case, statutory, and regulatory law - because you'll already be well-versed in that). Special educators, school counselors, and administrators need this book in their professional libraries; I wouldn't recommend it to general educators, though, because it's probably to dense for their purposes. The book is broken down, by chapter, as follows:
1) Intro to the American Legal System
2) Legal Research (which includes how to cite and find laws)
3) Legal Research on the Internet
4) The History of Law and Children With Disabilities
5) The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
6) Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
7) The Americans with Disabilities Act
8) The No Child Left Behind Act
9) Free Appropriate Public Education
10) Identification, Assessment, and Evaluation
11) The Individualized Education Program
12) Least Restrictive Environment
13) Procedural Safeguards
14) Disciplining Students with Disabilities
15) Additional Issues
Appendix A) Major Changes of IDEA 2004
Appendix B) Relevant Sections of the U.S. Constitution
My favorite feature of the book, though, isn't found in the pages. I love that it has a website that corresponds to the text. This is crucial because laws (especially case law, but also statutory and regulatory laws) change often, which has doomed many books in this field that become outdated shortly after publication. The website provides updates and additional resources (like powerpoints for each chapter that provide useful reviews of the content) to keep the book fresh.
