Most pre-service educational programs only cursorily cover the topic of advocacy, leaving many to enter the field without the knowledge and skills necessary for effective advocacy." This highly specialized book fills this training void by presenting the competencies, dispositions, knowledge, and skills necessary to become an effective advocate. Pre-service and in-service educators are introduced to topics such as ethical disposition, special education law, dispute resolution mechanisms, interpersonal communication skills, collaboration skills, and conflict resolution skills. In addition, numerous vignettes and case studies throughout help readers connect text concepts to real-life issues. Compassionate and informative, this book helps special education professionals learn how to make a difference in the educational lives of children with disabilities." For special education teachers and administrators. | | | |

"Making a Difference" might make a difference Jun 20, 2000 This guide to special education advocacy reiterates the need for professionals in that field to act on behalf of the students they serve. Given the new requirements for IEP team consensus, the chapter on dispute resolution alone makes the book worth having. Dr. Fiedler (an attorney, special educator, former hearing officer, advocate, and parent) includes many examples and suggestions for practical application of the information. This book would be useful as a textbook or as an addition to one's professional library.

Making A Difference Doesn't Jul 13, 2002 I was hoping that this would help me as a parent of a handicapped child, it didn't. Some of the other reviews were right. There is a lot of repetition.

Disappointing Jun 27, 2002
By Janet Heismen This book does not present anything new or any useful strategies for parents or professionals. The writing is fair, but it repeats itself far too much. Everything that was said in the book could have filled a third to a half the number of pages. The book by Turnbull is much more informative.
two stars Aug 30, 2002 I was hoping for a more useful book. I want ways to work with my kids teachers and what my rights are.
