5Great for kids with Sensory Integration Dysfunction  Sep 27, 2011 By Mertz
I bought these for my daughter who was having some fine motor issues that were showing up in her handwriting. She was holding her pencil incorrectly, gripping it too hard, breaking the pencil tip frequently, and bending her wrist and arm in a strange way to get more sensory input while writing. In one summer, we were able to help her to feel the pencil more strongly in her hand, correct the tight grips, and end the odd writing angle.

We had her use the weights at home and for the last few weeks of school. At first, her handwriting worsened because the pencil was so much heavier. But she quickly improved to her previous level and then over time improved to age appropriate handwriting. Now she doesn't even need to use them anymore and has passed them on to another "Sensory" kid in her classroom.

The O-Rings hold the pencil weight in place. The weights feel like a ceramic or stone material. Each one has a different weight, so you can alter the difficulty by using different weights. You can also move the weight up and down the length of the pencil to make it more difficult or easier to use.

These are the same weights as seen in "Sensory" catalogs for about double the price.

3Takes some getting used to, but good for some kids!  Aug 18, 2011 By Natalie Liberatore
Some kids in my class have a hard time putting enough pressure on the paper when they write or their pencil seems to just wiggle all around and away from them. These were good quality and although some kids were resistant to them at first, they grew accustomed to it and I saw improvement in their handwriting. These should be used with the recommendation of an occupational therapist or other handwriting/fine motor professional because not all kids with handwriting issues would benefit from them.
