well done! Mar 26, 2010
By Lorel Shea Take Control of Asperger's Syndrome- The Official Strategy Guide for Teens with Asperger's Syndrome and Non Verbal learning Disorder is an extremely well written and useful resource. The authors, Janet Price and Jennifer Engel Fisher, use clear language but do not condescend. The book is full of real-world advice that teens can put into practice right away.
The book is organized into ten chapters which make it easy to find information. Each chapter includes a title and mission statement. Chapter One : What are AS and NVLD? includes the mission statement, "To learn about the strengths and challenges of having Asperger's Syndrome or Non Verbal Learning Disorder."
A Venn diagram illustrates how characteristics of these disabilities overlap, as well as how they differ. Chapter three is all about self advocacy, a crucial skill for those who are in high school and college. An example from this section features a boy who spoke up to tell his classmates that eye contact is difficult for him, and that a lack of eye contact does not necessarily show disrespect. Chapter five is filled with tips for homework success. These very accessible strategies can simplify life for people with organizational challenges. Other important topics covered in this guide are appearance and good hygiene, sensory issues, and friendship. The list of suggested resources in the back is quite extensive, as is the bibliography.
This is a brilliant resource which should prove helpful to any tween or teen who struggles to understand and cope with AS or NVLD.

Thanks for a much needed resource! Mar 13, 2010

As a psychologist who works with many adolescents and families dealing with Asperger's and NLD, I am so happy to have such a practical, sensitive, and creative book for these students. Visually well-organized and verbally-clear, Ms. Price and Ms. Fisher demonstrate compassion, common sense, and tremendous understanding of the daily lives and school experiences of adolescents who benefit from explicit guidance of the social and school worlds. This is a must-have resource for all educational and mental health professionals!

Outstanding Guidance for Kids with Asperger's!! Aug 23, 2010
By Dr. Bonnie Zucker Authors Price & Fisher created the ultimate guidebook for teens with Asperger's, providing up-to-date information written in a clear and concise way, and a multitude of practical and usable suggestions that will be of tremendous value for any teen with AS. As a psychologist working with teens, this book is one I highly recommend. Not only is it an excellent resource, but it provides a great deal of comfort to a teen with AS as he will read the book and no longer feel alone in his struggle. A+

Fantastic Resource Guide for Teens with Disabilities May 09, 2010
By Gabriela L. Doyle
"book mom"
As a mother of a teenage daughter with NLD, I found this book to be an incredibly useful tool for helping my daughter cope with her learning challenges. Let's face it, life with a teen can be difficult enough but more so when that teen has been diagnosed with learning difficulties. This book presents helpful tools and advice that can make this transition into the teenage years much smoother. I only wish I had something like this years ago. Jennifer Engel Fisher and Janet Price have written a book that is easy to read by both parents and children alike. At the end of each chapter, they include a "Tips and Tricks" which summarizes and gives practical advice on how to successfully cope with these challenges. By practicing self-advocacy, using assistive technology and having a plan for success (including study groups) kids will have a better chance of succeeding in educational and social settings. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their child's educational experience. We are living in a time when we understand the importance of recognizing LDs and we are fortunate to have the tools to be able to implement a plan for success.
