 A Wonderful Children's Book Explaining Bipolar Disorder! Dec 11, 2007

I own a copy of this wonderfully illustrated little book. It addresses the issues of bipolar disorder in a way that young children can understand. It isn't technical or complicated at all. The illustrations and story combined make for a great little tool that can be used to teach children about bipolar disorder. I have read this book to young children myself and have found that, although they may have questions about bipolar disorder itself, it certainly isn't to technical for them to read. I highly recomend this book for children who need to know about bipolar disorder!!!

My daughter's dad (& my ex-husband) is bi-polar. He has put her through alot & this book seemd to help her understand & provide her something cute to read about it. There was one page that I was hesitant about what it said & I actually did an edit of my own & removed it so she never even knew it was missing. She is only 8 & has not thought about the possibly of it being a genetic connection to her that may cause her to have the same disease sometime in her life....that is a little much for a young child to take it.....

This book helped my 7-year-old granddaughter understand her mother's bipolar illness. She read it twice, and told me that it helped her understand everything better. I recommend it.

The book was a good start at explaining bipolar disorder, but it's not appropriate for younger children. There is a scene about mommy bear almost hurting baby bear that I completely left out when reading to my children; also, I'm not quite ready to tell my children that there is a good chance they may have bipolar disorder when they are older. I was very impressed that mommy bear HAS bipolar disorder rather then IS bipolar; this is a distinction I feel is very important. Aside from age-appropriate editing, this book offers a good starting point on explaining bipolar disorder to children.

Beautifully illustrated, very short book for the very young Aug 18, 2009

"Be good humans."
Nowhere in the item description does it show the age group that this book is aimed at. There is no "look inside" option, either (This may change after this review is published). I guess I should have known by the 28 pages, but I did not know that each page is mostly an illustration with very little text, as is normal for books designed for very young children.
It is a beautiful, well-written book, and may be useful in helping your very young child get a basic understanding of this particular mental illness. I also like the emphasis on "It's not your fault, and nothing that you do or say can cause Mommy's bad mood."
However, I think $17.99 (the price at the time of this review) is quite a bit overpriced, thus the reason for the lower rating. If it was less expensive, I might find someone to donate it to. But since the material is too young for my intended target, and far too expensive, it has been returned for a refund.
