5EXCELLENT book from a proven math genius!  Mar 22, 2009 By A frugal consumer
I had to review this book. It is a concise read as to what to do to help your child excel in math. The author does not have to prove anything about whether Asian math works because that is a fact. Look at Asia and look at India to see who is excelling at math. Or get a report on school districts in the U.S. that has a higher total of Asian students and you will see a school district with high Math scores.

The author is a math genius himself. The book elaborates on his perfect Math scores and achievements. I was wondering what was best to help my child and he gives practical no nonsense advice. I got so excited after reading, I suggested to a minimum of 10 relatives and friends. I am so blessed to discover this book. It is best to model those who achieve excellence. Reading this short book is surprisingly the best model I read in years of how to achieve in math. Math is no longer a subject we can just survive and forget. Math for the world to achieve, is a dire necessity.

5A wise book full of useful advice that actually quells the Math Wars  Aug 18, 2009 By B.
This pithy volume is full of new ideas. I've taught SAT and GRE math for three years, and am irritated that I haven't been hearing these ideas -- e.g. preparing for deep understanding with long-term memory work; creating a sensible system that incentivizes everything from working hard and quickly on each problem up to doing homework, period; the "rule of two," the "hydra" -- before. Good God, with these ideas in hand, I could have done significantly better with some students...

The boilerplate description of the author ("renowned educational innovator") sticks in the throat a little, but after reading this book (and using the author's excellent vocabulary software), I'm prepared to second that description.

The book does something important: it actually forwards the long-running Progressive / Traditionalist debate in math education. The author explains why both short-term memorization (the "drill and kill" of Trads) and anti-memorization (the Prog. camp) makes math unnecessarily difficult for students, and advocates the long-term memorization of only essential facts and skills (the "Asian system").

One reviewer alleged that the author wrote some of these reviews himself: I can't speak to that, but I can vouch that the book is superb and would not be surprised if all the utterly glowing reviews are legitimate. This math book is the wisest since G. Polya's How to Solve It, and much more applicable to the grade-, middle-, and high-school situation.

But -- to quote Reading Rainbow -- you don't have to take my word for it! The author has put the first 50 pages online as a downloadable PDF, and, as of this review, the entire book is up on Google Books.

5Great Motivational Suggestions - borrow from library  Jan 27, 2009 By Fun Life
For what it is this book is great. Has about 20 pages of information about how math can be taught so the student gains mastery. The rest of the book presents ways that parents may want to use to motivate their students to be interested in math.

I borrowed it from the library, read it in a day, it is really fast reading and has the best layout of any book I have ever read - making it a very fast read.

Just reading the key 10 pages on how math should be taught may change your view on why your student is not competent in math and will show you how to get the student there.

Having taken a few notes I am returning it to the library.

1I seriously doubt the author has ever taught...  May 21, 2008 By R. Taylor "raytayz"
...anyone anything -- especially math...basically he has contrived a system which he appears to claim is based upon "Asian methods"...this system involves a hour daily of drills in basic math in addition to the child's homework; also mandated is random drilling at other times -- e.g. while driving somewhere...well, one could easily imagine that an extra hour of study plus drilling would certainly improve something regardless of the method used...however, getting the child to comply is an issue the author choses to ignore...and the effects on the child's attitude towards math and learning in general are ignored as well...moreover, the author presents not a single piece of concrete evidence that such methodology works -- no cases studies, no supporting data period!...even the author's website doesn't offer a single reference from a satisfied customer!...I think this is just the author's imagination at work and not any sort of bonafide educational approach to teaching math.

...5/23/08 -- an addendum to what I posted above...as best as I can determine Mr. Vohra has little educational experience beyond some tutoring he did while at Brown University...and I doubt working as an "actuary at GEICO" provided much experience in applied education...and here is a link to a webgroup he runs:

http://education.meetup.com/75/members/6824208/

...if that's a current photo he looks like he's barely out of college...and judging from his website he has been in the education "business" for less than two years -- hardly enough time to become either a "legend in the world of exclusive private education" or a "most inspirational and sought-after educational" speaker...I certainly don't agree with the book and now even have serious doubts about its author.

5Excellence in Mathematics  Apr 21, 2008 By C. Malcolm
"The Equation for Excellence" is an excellent guide to parents as well as teachers as to the necessary steps that should be taken to improve the math as well as the analytical skills of their students. As a professor of physics at a local university, I have seen a drastic decrease in the analytical skills of students in freshman physics. This problem is directly related to the student's problem solving skills. I strongly endorse the Asian Method and other methods suggested in this book that develop the student's interest in mathematics and other analytical disciplines
