The McGraw-Hill Guide was the worst money that I have spent on a textbook for college thus far. The information in this textbook is common knowledge at best. Perhaps this information would be valuable for a middle school student however, a college student does not need to know that "We use writing to persuade other people." I finished my first semester of English 101 with an A and without using the textbook once. I cannot explain the frustration that this book caused me due to its sheer stupidity. I am convinced that this book is a scam. It was an easy way for professors to overcharge for a book that could be written with the knowledge of an eighth grader. I was only able to resell the book for eight dollars after paying eighty seven at the college bookstore. College students rarely have an extra eighty seven dollars to spend and the McGraw-Hill Guide is no way to waist that money.

Horrible Kindle Edition Feb 10, 2011

I bought the kindle version of this book due to it's massive discount compared to a physical copy, but it was not worth it. The E-Book does not have page numbers or pages, which make it impossible to find where you need to go. There are 16,579 "Locations" which act like pages, and since there are only 704 pages in the book you can see how they are worthless. There are links within the book to some page numbers so you can use those to get near the page you need and just keep going until you get to something that looks like what you should be on.
For format purposes charts of data have been saved as images which results in not being able to copy data out of them. The images are also compressed so they appear fuzzy and would make them difficult to read if you have poor eye sight.
This book also has DRM so you cannot put it on all of your devices at once. I put it on my computer and then tried to download it through the Iphone\Ipod app and it told me I would have to unauthorize and delete the data on my pc.
In short don't get the E-Book, spend the extra $10 and get it used.

I received my college english textbook in a timely fashion and in good condition. But instead of the PAPERBACK like I ordered, I received the "not for sale" non-student HARDCOVER edition incorrectly. I would have wanted to know that this would have created a problem for trade-in because I now cannot sell back my book to amazon. They don't take hardcover editions and the isbn numbers don't match. It's turned into a hassle, and overall I'm unhappy that they sent me the WRONG book. It was not the advertised one.

_The McGraw-Hill Guide_ is a comprehensive text book for first year writing courses. Because it is grounded in the WPA outcomes, it provides an effective map for reaching those outcomes. It also provides a lot of support for students, offering sample student essays and partial outlines to help students tackle difficult writing tasks. I have not, however, been able to use the online component for the text book. McGraw-Hill's support for the online supplement is *terrible*. However, as a text book, this one works as well as the _St. Martin's Guide_ or Bedford's _Successful College Writing_. Unlike _Successful College Writing_, annotated instructor's editions are not floating around for students to buy.

I have been using the McGraw-Hill Guide in my English classes for the past two semesters. I switched to the book because I was looking for a book that had three particular features: 1) contains what my students need to learn presented in a way they will relate to, 2) credible, established composition author(s)/publisher, 3) current/contemporary. This textbook does all three. The book is clearly and intuitively organized (and in a way that can support both classroom instruction and/or online instruction) and equips students with the tools they need for writing in an English class, writing in other classes, and writing in their professional and personal lives. I trust McGraw-Hill to publish good stuff for my classes, and Roen, Glau, and Maid are superb authors. The book addresses writing in the new digital era while still guiding students on traditional rhetoric. Students will like it, instructors will like it.
