Different Perspective...same potential! Aug 08, 2010 My 3yr old son was recently diagonosed as being on the Austism Spectrum.
A teacher lent me a copy of this book to read to help me better understand some of the constraints my son might be experiencing in his journey and development.
I loved this woman's insights into ASD and her experience and knowledge brings others into her world and allowed me to better appreciate how difficult it might be to adjust to the day-to-day realities that we all face given the way a person's brain assimilates all the daily stimuli and information.
She re-iterated throughout the book that these people who live with ASD, are some of the most influential and successful people on the planet and that their unique learning styles and gifts should be supported and encouraged. We should not try to "normalize" these individuals, but work with them to understand how they learn and in understanding this, help them to take responsibility for their social interaction and the effects of their actions on others.
I appreciated the short, concise chapters which help make the reading of it easier and allowed for a better absorption of the information it contained for me personally.
I wonder how many people my age might have be placed on the Austism Spectrum if tested per today's standards when they were developing into young members of society. I see trends in myself that make me wonder about where I might have tested out.
I am more hopeful, after reading this book, that my child will be able to develop into a valuable and contributing member of society, rather than be a burden on it.
We all have gifts and are wonderfully and uniquely formed. We all need support to reach our potentials. People on the "spectrum" are no different.
Regards,
David
Essential book for anyone working with Autistic children Jul 13, 2010 An unbelievable book that is so on target on the issues that Autistic people face. I bought copies for all of my family members and my son's preschool teachers. Grandin lays everything out in a very easy to read and understand format and not only provides the reader with the different challenges facing people who have Autism but how to work with each of these challenges. I've learned so much from this book. I have several books on Autism but this is the only one that seriously makes the cut. I can't wait to see her movie.
autism Jun 17, 2010 Great Book! I have really enjoyed and learned from reading all of the books by Temple Grandin. The best of all is "Thinking in Pictures" for me. It really helped me understand some of the students.
Classic book on autism and spectrum syndromes May 24, 2010 Older but wiser views from an autistic adult about what life is like for autistic people. This is a classic and a fascinating read.
Great read May 11, 2010 Interesting to read about Grandin's life. She has overcome a tremendous obstacle with such wonderful outcomes!
