- A practical approach that emphasizes real-life treatment over theory
- Resources for specific readers such as clinicians, students, or patients
Early chapters in Bipolar Disorder lay out the descriptive and diagnostic issues for classic bipolar I disorder, the more subtle "soft" bipolar disorders, and other disorders, such as hyperactivity and borderline personality, that are often misdiagnosed as bipolar. The text then covers the medical, psychiatric, and substance abuse disorders that can accompany bipolar disorders, and offers practical tips for non-medically trained therapists on how to spot these disorders. Finally, pharmacological, psychosocial, and additional treatments and interventions are covered. This straightforward resource is admirably suited for a wide variety of readers, including students and practicing mental health professionals, as well as individuals and others directly and indirectly affected by bipolar disorder. | | | |

For therapists and primary care providers: an excellent referenced source Nov 14, 2007
By PsychEducation As Brian Quinn explains very clearly, bipolar disorder is primarily a problem of depression. Therefore bipolarity -- the full range of bipolar presentations -- must be quite well understood by anyone who is going to treat depression. No longer can a practitioner say that she/he only treats depression, leaving bipolar disorder for psychiatrists to manage -- for two reasons: first, as many people are now painfully aware, it can be extremely difficult to find a psychiatrist who can see a new patient within a few weeks. Secondly, mood experts increasingly agree that bipolar disorder and "Major Depression" represent two extremes on a continuum with many patients at intermediate stages between the presentations characterized by the DSM-IV.
Therefore, even if one has the luxury of referring to a psychiatrist, differentiating unipolar from bipolar depression is increasingly recognized as a difficult task, more than we should ask from a busy primary care provider who has received little training in making this distinction (despite the FDA recommendation which appears in every antidepressant Prescribing Information that all patients who are too receive an antidepressant should be "screened for bipolar disorder).
Into this gap -- this chasm -- steps Brian Quinn with a concise guide to the understanding of the "bipolar spectrum" concept. One of the outstanding characteristics of this book is the extremely thorough referencing, of the caliber one would expect from from an academic bipolar specialist. Indeed, Brian Quinn is just such a specialist: his book reflects a remarkably thorough review of the literature, condensed into a practical summaries and recommendations.
Psychotherapists who wish to improve their understanding of bipolar disorders will appreciate being educated by a therapist colleague who has achieved a masterful understanding of the full spectrum of mood disorders. Those rare primary care providers who choose to spend their limited free time educating themselves using this book will be well rewarded.
