Great book to help friends, family, and children understand Aspergers Sep 02, 2008

I gave this book five stars, only because I could not give it more.I have never written a book review before, but after much thought I felt compelled to do so for this book.
The genius of the book is that woven into a wonderful story and captivating artwork is a transcending message about Asperger's Syndrome. As a parent of an Asperger's child I have found this message helpful in explaining my son's unique behaviors to his teachers and classmates, friends, and family. What is most wonderful about the book is that is does not treat the Asperger's child as an individual with a contagious disorder, but simply a child with some differences from the norm and a differing perspective. Sam triumphs in demonstrating that a child with mild Asperger's can succeed if those around the child afford some latitude for the child's actions and understanding that simple things can be troubling and hindering.
I wish this was required reading for all. The promotion of understanding sure would make life easier for these kids.

Understanding Sam is a brilliant story Sep 01, 2008
By Linda L. Gens Not only is Understanding Sam a well told story that captures attention by bringing a simplistic, yet effective and realistic understanding of Asperberger's syndrome to all; but also boasts absolutely brilliant, colorful and emotionally heart tugging illustrations. ---truly captivating and a most useful book in terms of fostering the kind of understanding, tolerance and acceptance we want to instil in our children and society as a whole.
Very well done.

Designed to raise awareness of Asperger syndrome, Understanding Sam is a story about an undiagnosed child. Sam's everyday behaviors and characteristics are presented but overlooked by parents and teacher as 'red flags' to seek help. However, it is when Sam leaves home at night time that his parents realize they need to see the doctor. Overall, this is a comprehensive story that gives symptoms, behaviors, and characteristics of a child with Asperger's, along with examples and outcomes that include diagnosis and team approach to treatment... all presented in a the context of a positive, beautifully-illustrated, fictional story. Granted, it is a bit long (56 pages) and the Dr. Liezl diagnosis section is perhaps more useful as a resource for the reading adult, but the book and story present some fantastic angles and scenarios that could easily be used as a basis for classroom discussion and learning. The letter to the children and "10 Helpful Tips Especially for You" are an extraordinary resource for parents, therapists, teachers and children. This book belongs in every school and library in the country.
Lovely story brilliantly illustrated Oct 25, 2011
By Herman Thorbecke As a tutor I have worked with children suffering from Asperger. This lovely story brilliantly illustrates some of the typical forms of behaviour that these children, their parents and their teachers have to deal with. The book also draws attention to the need for special educational and coordinated efforts and the absolute necessity for cooperation between everyone involved. Parents or teachers should not be expected/required to deal with the challanges of rearing and educating children like Sam on their own and without support.
Amazing authorship and artistic genius Jun 25, 2011
By deutsch_gurl This story of Sam is like many other boys and girls out there that are born and live with this disorder. It is not easy to be a friend, a sister, a brother, or any other relation to a child with Asperger's. These children are misunderstood all throughout school and college and they continue to struggle through adulthood with a disorder they have very little control over. They fear interactions with others, large crowds create anxiety and they struggle just to say "hello" to someone new. This was a delightful story of patience, kindness, and courage in the face of adversity but an achievement in illustration. I loved it not only for it's harrowing tale but the magnificent paintings that I love so well.
