How I wish I had this book when I had a bipolar spouse. I read it after we divorced. However, since we will always be linked through our children and grandchildren, I can still put into practice the compassion and understanding that Dr. Last lays out. Cynthia Last is a specialist in this subject as well as in bipolar disorder in children and young adults and it shows. She has the inside track that many authors don't due to her many and varied experiences. MotherWarrior

This book is a must read for anyone in a relationship with a Bipolar. The author is so open to her own BP life and she helps us so much to understand better this complicated disease. I wish I would have read the book earlier, I would have reacted differently to the roller coaster and coped better.
Full of good advices. Excellent.

I was pleased to be able to hear both sides of this story. My husband has suffered with what we thought was chronic depression for over 20 years. Kept wondering why the meds weren't working. After being diagnosed with Bi-Polar II Disorder, he is now on the right kind of medication and we are trusting that it will bring him relief. I hope this book will help people see this disorder in a new light and lay down the old stigmas connected to mental illness.

This book was not great. Sure, it had a lot of great information about bipolar disorder. However, if that is what I was looking for, I would have bought one of the many books about the disorder in general. However, this book was written with the specific focus of dealing with romantic relationships, and in this area, the information was extremely lacking. Putting a phrase like "your mate" or "your partner" within each sentence does not in it of itself make this book about relationships. The advice? A broken record. "Talk to your doctor about adjusting medication" and "have compassion, remember this is not in your partner's control," and "go to a support group, you're not alone," etc. No matter what the issue, these were the only suggestions. This advice is sprinkled with superficial example conversations, in which the bipolar person ends up seeing reason within the span of one page. Unless you are a person who is unaware of how to have a compassionate yet logical conversation, I'm not sure how this will help you. Also offered are equally superficial do's and don't's, such as don't respond with anger and panic, do remain calm. Some of these are less painfully obvious than others, but all can be easily found if you google any kind of psychological problem: bereavement, depression, etc. Again, this book has good information on the basics of bipolar disorder, but offers very little in the way of concrete strategies or real-life problem solving for the significant other.
I also find the chapter about taking care of yourself pretty outrageous. We are advised to take a bubble bath and connect with friends. Verbal abuse is given three short paragraphs. There is no mention at all of what to do in a situation of physical abuse, or if your children are being abused. Although that is not my situation, I can imagine how someone in that situation could be even more confused and isolated than anyone else. Leaving your significant other is briefly mentioned at the end, and, if you read between the lines, you can see that it's barely a viable option in the author's opinion.
All in all, this book is simplistic at best, and highly biased and useless at worst. It does little to address the real-life confusion and isolation faced by those who are in a relationship with someone with bipolar disorder. It is full of assembly-line advice and fairy-tale stories. I recommend looking for a different book on relationships, or just buying a book on bipolar disorder in general for more in-depth information.
